Navigating NZ's ever evolving compliance

In recent years the government decided that the councils and compliance building inspection people were better off to spend their time on the larger projects as the demand was there so they determined that it was best to concentrate on the projects that would bring in several thousands of dollars rather than the small consents such as sheds and minor consents that based on the allocation of resources and money coming in.

The rules as of 12th September 2021, state you may build a lightweight structure as long as it does not exceed 30 square metres in size and it is built by a licensed building practitioner (LBP) or it is engineered to suitable structure and built of materials that have the durability for the NZ building code see here

You need to consult your local council to confirm that this activity isn't going to be an issue as every council has a different policy.

Eco Housing has designed a kit set frame assembly where all the materials meet the required durability of NZ council and have LBP's on hand to take care of all the hard work.

We have an engineers certificate that states our metal structure meets the requirements of 55 metres per second wind speed (Which is typically the wind speed for 80 to 90 per cent of NZ).

As we step through the building code the intents and purpose of someone buying our units there are other factors to fulfil to fit into this compliant building code.

Our units are compliant with:
  • 70 mm EPS underfloor insulation R value exceeding 2.4 which is your typical NZ pink batts
  • 75 mm EPS has an R valve no less than 3.3 Ceiling R values

  • we provide our kits with ceiling batts as Supplied in NZ to meet this criteria. Making units fully insulated.
